To investigate the fluid-structer interaction in cavitating flow, a numerical method based on a loosely coupled scheme is established under the open-source code OpenFOAM framework. The incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved in the flow solver, combined with a structural dynamics solver with one degree of freedom. In the flow solver, the large eddy simulation (LES) approach, Kunz cavitation model, and volume of fluid (VOF) method are adopted to investigate the cavitation-vortex interactions. Then, vortex-induced vibration and cavitation-induced vibration in unsteady cavitating flow around a circular cylinder is analyzed. The structural vibrations induced by vortex and cavitation in non-cavitating and cavitating flows are simulated and compared to observe the characteristics of cavitation-structure interaction. The results showed that the Strouhal number (St) becomes smaller in cavitating flow with the same Reynold number. High frequencies fluctuations of drag coefficients are induced by the cavity shedding and collapse in the cavitating flow. Thus, the structural vibration in the cavitating flow has larger amplitude in some high frequencies comparing to the non-cavitating flow. Moreover, the differences between the lock in phenomenon in cavitating and non-cavitating flow are also discussed.
